Mastery on the Street in Pelourinho

Mestre Regis — Reginaldo Laureano Bispo — builds a shekere out across the street from afoxé* As Filhas de Gandhy (The Daughters of Gandhi). This the female version of Os Filhos de Gandhy (The Sons of Gandhi), created in 1949, a year after Gandhi was assassinated. The female version was created in 1979 and the women march during Carnival playing rhythms of candomblé taught to them by Regis. Regis is also a master of candomblé angola.

*An afoxé (ah-faw-SHEH) is a group which utilizes the rhythms and music of candomblé outside of a house of candomblé.
