No, it’s not a character from a Gilbert & Sullivan opera! This is the title of the King of the Yorubas, and the king will be here in Brazil between the 6th and the 17th of June (not sure when during this period he’ll be in Salvador). There is sure to be lots of fawning and fa fa fa, talks and lectures and solemnities and eternal promises…and the king will be off back to Nigeria and his grand white palace and white Rolls Royce Phantom.
The King is sure to make a visit to Pelourinho. If he passes by on the street I’ll shout out a “Hello!!!” This I did with another royal personage, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who turned around and said “Where you from man?” (actually I was sitting inside the shop when I saw an entourage pass. Curious, I went to the door and saw that it was Kareem and company. I said “Kareem! You gonna walk by my shop just like THAT?!” And THEN he turned around).
The whole group, Secret Service guys and all (Hillary as Sec. of State had sent Kareem down on some kind of mission) came in and I had the great pleasure of turning Kareem on to some amazing Brazilian music (he’s a huge jazz fan). A sweet sweet man! He asked me if I was married to a local girl and I said yeah. He said he’s married to an Island girl.
Now that’s REAL royalty!
